Turkey: strong, sustained growth, 1980–2025

Turkey combined strong construction- and consumption-led growth with recurring currency and inflation crises, most severely in 2001 and again from 2018 onward. Between 1980 and 2025, Turkey's GDP per capita grew from $1,516 to $18,599 (current US$), a compound annual growth rate of 5.7% — strong, sustained growth. Annual GDP growth averaged 4.6% with a year-to-year standard deviation of 4.1 points, reflecting considerable volatility and periodic crises. Structurally, agriculture's share of the economy moved from 26.1% to 5.2% of GDP (a classic decline as the economy industrialized/modernized), while services rose from 49.0% to 59.4% of GDP, underscoring a shift toward a services-driven economy. On human development, life expectancy rose from 62.7 to 77.4 years, while tertiary school enrollment moved from 6.3% to 105.9%, while the urban population share grew from 39.9% to 89.5%.

What this growth cost: Growth was not without cost: per-capita CO2 emissions rose from 1.80 to 5.38 tonnes CO2e per person; income inequality (Gini index) widened from 41.0 to 43.7; the poverty headcount ratio fell from 9.0% to 0.2%.
