Romania: explosive, multi-decade catch-up growth, 1987–2025

Post-1989 economic transition was slower and rockier than in Central Europe, but 2007 EU accession and strong foreign direct investment in manufacturing and IT services drove a sustained catch-up boom in the 2010s. Between 1987 and 2025, Romania's GDP per capita grew from $1,659 to $22,538 (current US$), a compound annual growth rate of 7.1% — explosive, multi-decade catch-up growth. Annual GDP growth averaged 2.2% with a year-to-year standard deviation of 5.0 points, reflecting considerable volatility and periodic crises. Structurally, agriculture's share of the economy moved from 21.8% to 3.0% of GDP (a classic decline as the economy industrialized/modernized), while services rose from 24.2% to 61.7% of GDP, underscoring a shift toward a services-driven economy. On human development, life expectancy rose from 69.1 to 76.5 years, while tertiary school enrollment moved from 28.1% to 55.2%, while the urban population share grew from 49.7% to 52.2%.

What this growth cost: Growth was not without cost: per-capita CO2 emissions fell from 9.01 to 3.72 tonnes CO2e per person; income inequality (Gini index) widened from 23.3 to 29.8; the poverty headcount ratio increased from 0.0% to 0.7%.
