Germany: steady but modest growth, 1980–2025

Reunification in 1990 fused a struggling East German economy onto the West, and subsequent labor-market reforms (the 2003-2005 Hartz reforms) and a strong export-manufacturing base underpinned steady, if unspectacular, growth. Between 1980 and 2025, Germany's GDP per capita grew from $12,183 to $60,496 (current US$), a compound annual growth rate of 3.6% — steady but modest growth. Annual GDP growth averaged 1.5% with a year-to-year standard deviation of 2.0 points, reflecting relatively stable macroeconomic conditions. Structurally, agriculture's share of the economy moved from 1.1% to 0.9% of GDP (a classic decline as the economy industrialized/modernized), while services rose from 56.5% to 64.5% of GDP, underscoring a shift toward a services-driven economy. On human development, life expectancy rose from 72.8 to 80.8 years, while tertiary school enrollment moved from 60.9% to 76.7%, while the urban population share grew from 79.9% to 82.1%.

What this growth cost: Growth was not without cost: per-capita CO2 emissions fell from 14.50 to 6.94 tonnes CO2e per person; income inequality (Gini index) widened from 29.3 to 33.7; the poverty headcount ratio increased from 0.1% to 0.7%.
