Stock performance
History
The Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC) has mined the Kajaran deposit in southern Armenia's Syunik province since the Soviet era, when it was developed in the early 1950s. After independence it was privatized, with German metals trader Cronimet among its owners for many years, and the Armenian government later acquired a stake in it.
Business model
ZCMC extracts ore from an open-pit mine at Kajaran and processes it into copper and molybdenum concentrates, which are exported for smelting abroad.
Market position
ZCMC is Armenia's largest company and one of the world's significant molybdenum producers.
Country impact
Copper and molybdenum concentrates are among Armenia's largest exports, making ZCMC the country's biggest taxpayer and a major employer in the remote south. Its ownership has been a recurring political issue.
