History

Zain Sudan began as Mobitel, Sudan's first mobile operator, which started up at the end of 1996 and launched commercial service in Khartoum in 1997. Kuwait's Zain group took full ownership in 2006 and rebranded the company as Zain Sudan in 2007.

Business model

Zain Sudan sells prepaid and postpaid mobile voice and data services and digital services such as mobile money, with a nationwide network built up over more than two decades.

Market position

Zain Sudan has long been the country's largest mobile operator by subscribers and one of the largest operations in the Zain group, competing with Sudatel and MTN Sudan.

Country impact

Zain Sudan was for years one of the largest foreign investors in Sudan and a major taxpayer, but the war that began in 2023 and the collapse of the Sudanese pound have badly hit its network and earnings, illustrating the conflict's toll on the formal economy.
