History

Yemenia, the national airline, traces its origins to the early 1960s in North Yemen and absorbed the South Yemen carrier Alyemda after unification. It is owned by the governments of Yemen and Saudi Arabia, and since the war began in 2015 its operations have been severely restricted, with long closures of Sana'a airport and aircraft lost in airstrikes.

Business model

Yemenia operates a small fleet on a limited network linking Aden, Seiyun, and, at times, Sana'a with destinations such as Cairo, Amman, Jeddah, and other regional cities, carrying passengers including medical travelers and Yemenis working abroad.

Market position

Yemenia is Yemen's flag carrier and, for long stretches of the conflict, its only international airline.

Country impact

With land borders difficult to cross, Yemenia's limited flights have been one of the few ways for Yemenis to leave the country for medical treatment, study, or work, making it an essential lifeline.
