History

United Overseas Bank was founded by a group of Chinese immigrant businessmen in colonial Singapore to serve the local business community, and grew under the long stewardship of the Wee family into one of Singapore's three dominant banks, expanding steadily across Southeast Asia through both organic branch growth and strategic acquisitions of regional banks in Thailand, Indonesia, and elsewhere.

Business model

UOB provides retail, corporate, and private banking services across Singapore and a deliberately built Southeast Asian regional network spanning Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, giving it one of the more geographically diversified footprints among Singapore's major banks. Its regional strategy has focused on serving cross-border trade and investment flows within ASEAN specifically.

Market position

UOB is one of the three dominant banks in Singapore alongside DBS and OCBC, with a particularly deliberate strategic focus on Southeast Asian regional integration and cross-border ASEAN banking services. It competes with DBS and OCBC domestically and with various national banks across its regional markets.

Country impact

UOB is one of the largest and longest-established banks in Singapore, and continued family involvement through the Wee family gives it a distinctive ownership structure among the country's major financial institutions. It remains central to Singapore's role as a regional banking and trade-finance hub.
