Türkmenhimiýa
Stock performance
History
Türkmenhimiýa was established by presidential decree in 2007 to develop Turkmenistan's chemical industry, with the aim of turning more of the country's natural gas and mineral resources into higher-value products. Since then it has commissioned large fertilizer plants built by Japanese, Turkish, and Korean contractors, including the Garabogaz urea plant.
Business model
The state concern produces nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonia and urea from natural gas, along with potash, iodine, bromine, and other chemicals, supplying domestic cotton and wheat farms and exporting the surplus.
Market position
Türkmenhimiýa is Turkmenistan's main chemical producer and has become a meaningful regional exporter of urea, though it is small compared with the major fertilizer producers in Russia, the Gulf, and China.
Country impact
The company is the centerpiece of Turkmenistan's strategy to diversify beyond raw gas exports by processing gas at home. Its fertilizer output also supports the state-directed cotton and wheat sectors, which remain major employers.
