History
Toyota was spun off from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works by Kiichiro Toyoda to build automobiles, drawing on the parent company's engineering culture. It struggled through Japan's postwar reconstruction before developing the Toyota Production System — just-in-time manufacturing and continuous improvement (kaizen) — that became the global benchmark for lean manufacturing and let Toyota compete on quality and cost against much larger Western rivals. Its 1997 launch of the Prius made it the first mass-market hybrid vehicle, cementing a reputation for engineering pragmatism that it has carried into a more cautious, multi-pathway approach to electrification than some rivals.
Business model
Toyota designs, manufactures, and sells vehicles under the Toyota and Lexus brands across a full range from compact cars to trucks and hybrids, with a large captive finance arm providing loans and leases to buyers and dealers. Its manufacturing philosophy emphasizes supplier partnerships, minimal inventory, and continuous process refinement, giving it a persistent cost and quality edge that it has defended for decades against both established and new entrants.
Market position
Toyota is the largest automaker in the world by global vehicle sales, competing closely with Volkswagen for that title year to year, and is the clear global leader in hybrid vehicle technology and sales. It has taken a more gradual approach to full battery-electric vehicles than Tesla or Chinese rivals like BYD, betting that hybrids and eventually hydrogen will remain important alongside EVs — a strategy that has drawn both criticism for being too slow and credit for hedging against uneven EV demand.
Country impact
Toyota is the largest company in Japan by revenue and a defining pillar of the country's manufacturing economy, anchoring a vast domestic supplier network across the auto-parts industry. Its export volumes are a significant contributor to Japan's trade balance, and its wage-setting decisions in annual labor negotiations are watched nationally as a signal for broader Japanese wage trends.
