History

Altyn Asyr, which operates under the TM CELL brand, was established by official decree in 2004 as the state-owned mobile operator. It became the country's only mobile operator in 2017, when the Russian company MTS suspended its Turkmen operations after its license was not renewed.

Business model

TM CELL provides mobile voice and data services nationwide and has rolled out 4G in major cities. Prices and services are set by the state, and internet access is heavily filtered.
