History

Telkom Indonesia's origins trace to a Dutch colonial-era postal and telegraph service established in the mid-nineteenth century, which evolved over a century into Indonesia's state telecommunications monopoly. It was corporatized and partially privatized through public listings on the Indonesian and New York stock exchanges in the 1990s, while the Indonesian government retained majority ownership and control, and it built out both fixed-line and, through subsidiary Telkomsel, the country's leading mobile-network business as Indonesia's telecom market opened to broader competition.

Telkom Indonesia provides fixed-line, mobile (through Telkomsel), broadband internet, and data-center and digital-services offerings across Indonesia's vast archipelago of thousands of islands, a uniquely challenging geography for telecom infrastructure deployment. Its state backing has historically supported investment in reaching remote and less commercially attractive regions alongside its more profitable urban operations.

Market position

Telkom Indonesia, through Telkomsel, holds the largest mobile-subscriber base in Indonesia, and the parent company is the dominant fixed-line and broadband provider nationally. It competes with several private mobile operators, but its scale, government backing, and extensive existing infrastructure give it a durable leadership position across the Indonesian telecommunications market.

Telkom Indonesia is one of the largest companies in Indonesia and a critical piece of national digital infrastructure, given the country's unusual geographic fragmentation across more than seventeen thousand islands. Its network investment decisions are closely tied to Indonesian government goals around expanding internet access and digital-economy participation outside the country's major urban centers.
