History

Telenor traces to Norway's original state telegraph administration, established in the mid-nineteenth century, which evolved over more than a century into the country's national telecommunications provider before being corporatized and partially privatized in the 1990s and 2000s as Norway liberalized its telecom sector. It expanded significantly into Asian mobile markets, including Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Malaysia, becoming one of the more internationally diversified European telecom operators.

Business model

Telenor provides mobile and fixed-line telecommunications services in Norway and other Nordic markets, alongside historically significant operations across South and Southeast Asia, giving it a distinctive mix of mature European and higher-growth Asian mobile businesses, though it has divested several Asian units in recent years to refocus on its Nordic core.

Market position

Telenor is the largest telecommunications operator in Norway and has historically held leading mobile-market positions in several Asian markets, though its portfolio has narrowed as it has sold various international operations to concentrate on higher-margin Nordic markets.

Country impact

Telenor is one of the largest companies in Norway and a partly state-owned former monopoly central to the country's telecommunications infrastructure. Its historical Asian expansion made it one of the more geographically diversified Nordic companies before its recent strategic refocusing.
