History

TCS was founded as a division of the Tata Group, India's oldest and largest business conglomerate, to provide computing and consulting services, initially to other Tata companies before expanding to outside clients. It became a pioneer of the offshore IT-services model that grew explosively from the 1990s onward, as Western companies sought lower-cost software development, maintenance, and business-process outsourcing from Indian firms with strong English-language technical talent pools. TCS's 2004 initial public offering was, at the time, one of the largest in Indian corporate history.

Business model

TCS provides IT consulting, software development, systems integration, and business-process outsourcing services to large corporate and government clients worldwide, organized around long-term contracts with major global banks, insurers, retailers, and manufacturers. Its business model relies on a large, trained workforce delivering projects at a lower cost than clients' in-house teams, combined with deep, multi-year client relationships that make TCS a default vendor for ongoing technology needs rather than a one-off contractor.

Market position

TCS is the largest IT-services company in India and one of the largest in the world by market value and employee count, competing with domestic rivals Infosys and Wipro as well as global players like Accenture. Its scale, financial discipline, and Tata Group backing have made it consistently one of the most profitable companies in the Indian IT-services sector, and it is often used as a bellwether for the health of the broader Indian outsourcing industry.

Country impact

TCS is one of the largest employers in India, with hundreds of thousands of employees, and is a cornerstone of the country's IT-services export industry, which is one of India's largest sources of foreign-currency earnings. Its hiring and wage trends are closely watched as indicators of the health of the broader Indian technology labor market, and its success helped establish India's global reputation as a technology-services hub.
