Stock performance
History
Sudan Telecommunications Company (Sudatel) was established in 1993 when the government partially privatized the national telecom operator. It launched the Sudani mobile brand in the 2000s and expanded abroad, acquiring telecom licenses in Senegal and Mauritania.
Business model
Sudatel provides mobile services under the Sudani brand, along with fixed-line, internet, and international wholesale services, in Sudan, while subsidiaries operate mobile networks in Senegal (Expresso) and Mauritania (Chinguitel).
Market position
Sudatel is one of Sudan's three main telecom operators, alongside Zain Sudan and MTN Sudan, and is listed on the Khartoum Stock Exchange; the government holds a significant stake.
Country impact
Since war broke out in April 2023, telecom networks, including Sudatel's, have suffered extensive damage and repeated outages, cutting off millions of people from communication and mobile banking at a time when they are most needed.
