Steamships Trading Company
Stock performance
History
Steamships Trading Company was founded in 1918 in Port Moresby as a shipping and trading business in what was then the Australian-administered Territory of Papua. Over the following century it diversified into property, hotels, and logistics, and Hong Kong's Swire group became its majority shareholder.
Business model
Steamships operates in three main areas: hotels and commercial property, including major hotels and office and residential buildings in Port Moresby and Lae; logistics, including coastal shipping, port services, and road transport; and other commercial investments.
Market position
Steamships is one of Papua New Guinea's oldest and largest diversified companies and is listed on PNG's national stock exchange.
Country impact
Its coastal shipping and logistics services help move goods around a country with very limited road connections, and its hotels and offices are key infrastructure for business and government in the capital.
