History

Spotify was founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon with the explicit goal of offering a legal, easy-to-use alternative to the rampant music piracy of the mid-2000s, betting that a well-designed, affordably priced streaming service could convert pirates into paying customers more effectively than industry litigation had. It launched first in Sweden and other European markets before expanding to the United States in 2011, and grew into the largest music-streaming platform in the world, fundamentally reshaping how the recorded-music industry generates revenue in the process, shifting the business from unit sales toward streaming royalties.

Spotify offers on-demand music and podcast streaming through both a free, advertising-supported tier and a paid subscription tier without ads, licensing content from record labels and artists in exchange for royalty payments based substantially on stream counts.
