Sonatrach
Stock performance
History
Sonatrach was established shortly after Algerian independence from France as the state oil and gas company, and its 1971 nationalization of French oil interests was a landmark and symbolically significant assertion of Algerian economic sovereignty. It grew into one of the largest oil and gas companies in Africa, central to Algeria's economy and to European energy supply given the country's extensive pipeline connections to Italy and Spain.
Business model
Sonatrach explores for, produces, refines, and exports oil and natural gas from Algeria's substantial Saharan reserves, operating major pipeline infrastructure connecting Algerian gas fields directly to Southern European markets, and channels the large majority of its revenue into Algerian state finances.
Market position
Sonatrach is the largest company in Africa by revenue and one of the most significant gas suppliers to Southern Europe, a role that grew in strategic importance after 2022 as European countries sought to reduce dependence on Russian gas following the invasion of Ukraine.
Country impact
Sonatrach is by far the most important company in Algeria's economy, generating the overwhelming majority of Algerian export revenue and government income, making the country's fiscal health almost entirely dependent on Sonatrach's production levels and global oil and gas prices.
