Sonae began as a small particleboard manufacturer in northern Portugal and grew, under the leadership of businessman Belmiro de Azevedo, into one of Portugal's largest and most diversified conglomerates, expanding into retail, telecommunications, and shopping-center development from the 1980s onward as Portugal's economy modernized following EU accession.
