Smurfit WestRock
Stock performance
History
The company traces to Jefferson Smurfit's Dublin box-making business, which grew over decades into Smurfit Kappa, one of Europe's largest paper-based packaging companies, through extensive acquisition across Europe and Latin America. In 2024 Smurfit Kappa merged with US packaging giant WestRock to form Smurfit WestRock, creating one of the largest packaging companies in the world and, like several other major Irish companies, choosing Ireland as the combined group's headquarters while gaining a primary New York listing.
Business model
Smurfit WestRock manufactures paper-based packaging — corrugated boxes, containerboard, and specialty packaging — for consumer-goods, food, and industrial customers across a combined European, North American, and Latin American manufacturing footprint built through decades of acquisition on both sides of the Atlantic. Its scale in mills and box plants gives it integrated control from raw paper production through finished packaging.
Market position
Smurfit WestRock is one of the largest paper-based packaging companies in the world following its 2024 merger, competing with International Paper and other global packaging producers. The merger combined Smurfit Kappa's European and Latin American strength with WestRock's North American scale.
Country impact
Smurfit WestRock is among the largest companies headquartered in Ireland and, like CRH, exemplifies the pattern of major Irish-founded industrial companies growing to global scale through acquisition while choosing to retain an Irish domicile even as their operations and listings become increasingly US-centered.
