History

SM Investments grew out of a single Manila shoe store opened by Chinese-Filipino entrepreneur Henry Sy, which expanded into a department-store chain and then, from the 1980s onward, into shopping-mall development, banking, and real estate, becoming the largest conglomerate in the Philippines. The Sy family has retained control across generations, and SM's malls in particular became a defining feature of Philippine urban retail and social life.

Business model

SM Investments operates across retail (department stores and supermarkets), shopping-mall development and management (SM Prime Holdings, one of the largest mall operators in Southeast Asia), and banking through BDO Unibank, giving the conglomerate diversified exposure across Philippine consumer spending, real estate, and financial services.

Market position

SM Investments is the largest conglomerate in the Philippines by market value, and its SM malls are the dominant shopping-center format across the country, while its BDO Unibank subsidiary is the largest bank in the Philippines, giving the group leading positions across multiple major sectors simultaneously.

Country impact

SM Investments is the largest company in the Philippines and a defining feature of Philippine consumer and urban life, with SM malls serving as de facto community centers in many Philippine cities. It is one of the largest employers and taxpayers in the country.
