History

Škoda began as a bicycle manufacturer before moving into automobile production, becoming Czechoslovakia's dominant carmaker through the twentieth century, including through the communist era when it continued producing vehicles despite limited investment and international isolation. Volkswagen acquired a majority stake in 1991, shortly after the fall of communism, and substantial German investment transformed Škoda into one of the most successful and profitable brands within the broader Volkswagen Group.

Business model

Škoda Auto designs and manufactures passenger vehicles sold across Europe and other international markets under the Škoda brand, operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen Group while retaining its own distinct engineering and manufacturing base concentrated in the Czech Republic.

Market position

Škoda is one of the most successful and profitable brands within the Volkswagen Group, having transformed from a communist-era joke brand into a genuinely well-regarded value-oriented automaker across Europe, competing with other mainstream Volkswagen Group brands and rivals like SEAT and mainstream Asian automakers.

Country impact

Škoda Auto is the largest company in the Czech Republic and the anchor of the country's automotive-manufacturing industry, which is one of the largest contributors to Czech exports and industrial employment, with a vast domestic supplier network built around Škoda's Mladá Boleslav production base.
