History

Škoda began as a bicycle manufacturer before moving into automobile production, becoming Czechoslovakia's dominant carmaker through the twentieth century, including through the communist era when it continued producing vehicles despite limited investment and international isolation. Volkswagen acquired a majority stake in 1991, shortly after the fall of communism, and substantial German investment transformed Škoda into one of the most successful and profitable brands within the broader Volkswagen Group.
