History

Singapore Airlines was formed when a shared Malaysia-Singapore national airline split into two separate carriers following Singapore's 1965 independence and subsequent divergence from Malaysia, and it built a reputation over subsequent decades as one of the world's most consistently premium-rated airlines through heavy investment in service quality, cabin innovation, and a young, modern fleet. It was among the launch customers for the Airbus A380 superjumbo and has repeatedly topped global airline quality rankings.

Business model

Singapore Airlines operates premium long-haul and regional passenger and cargo flights from its Changi Airport hub, positioning itself deliberately at the high end of service quality rather than competing primarily on price, alongside budget subsidiary Scoot serving more price-sensitive routes. Majority state investment-arm ownership through Temasek Holdings has supported long-term investment even through severe industry downturns.

Market position

Singapore Airlines is consistently ranked among the world's best airlines for service quality and is the dominant carrier operating from Singapore's Changi Airport, one of Asia's most important aviation hubs. It competes with Gulf carriers like Emirates and Qatar Airways for premium long-haul transfer traffic between Asia, Europe, and Australia.

Country impact

Singapore Airlines is one of the most globally recognized Singaporean brands and a significant contributor to Singapore's status as a major aviation and logistics hub, with Changi Airport's connectivity considered a core piece of national economic infrastructure. It is majority owned by Temasek, the state investment company.
