History
The Société d'Exploitation du Transgabonais (Setrag) holds the concession, granted in the mid-2000s, to operate the Trans-Gabon railway, which was built between the 1970s and 1980s to link the port of Owendo near Libreville with Franceville in the southeast. It is a subsidiary of Comilog and therefore part of the Eramet group.
Business model
Setrag carries manganese ore, timber, fuel, and general freight along the line, along with passengers, and is investing in track renewal under its concession agreement with the state.
Market position
Setrag operates Gabon's only railway, which is the main transport link between the coast and the interior.
Country impact
The railway is vital for Gabon's manganese and timber exports and for connecting interior towns where roads are poor, and derailments or disruptions on the line have an immediate impact on exports and supplies.
