History
The Société d'Énergie et d'Eau du Gabon (SEEG) was created in 1950 and was privatized in 1997, when France's Veolia took control under a long-term concession. In 2018 the government ended the concession and took over the company, accusing Veolia of poor service, and SEEG has since been publicly run.
Business model
SEEG produces, transports, and distributes both electricity and drinking water across Gabon, relying on hydropower, gas, and diesel generation.
Market position
SEEG is the sole national provider of electricity and water in Gabon.
Country impact
Frequent power and water cuts in Libreville have been a source of public anger and political pressure, and improving SEEG's performance has been a priority for the government that took power in 2023.
