History
The Société Béninoise d'Énergie Électrique (SBEE) is Benin's state electricity utility. For decades the country depended on imported electricity, much of it bought through a joint utility shared with Togo, but since the late 2010s the government has invested in domestic gas-fired and solar plants to improve supply and reduce reliance on imports.
Business model
SBEE distributes and sells electricity to households and businesses, buying power from domestic plants, the joint Benin-Togo electricity company, and neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Ghana.
Market position
SBEE is the national electricity distributor in Benin.
Country impact
Frequent outages and high costs long held back Beninese businesses, and the expansion of domestic generation has been one of the government's flagship economic reforms.
