History

Sasol was established by the South African government to develop synthetic fuel production from the country's abundant coal reserves, a strategic priority driven by South Africa's lack of significant domestic oil reserves and, later, by the international oil embargoes imposed during the apartheid era, which made domestic synthetic-fuel production a matter of national energy security. The company developed and commercialized coal-to-liquids and gas-to-liquids technology that remains among the most advanced in the world, and was privatized following South Africa's transition to democracy in the 1990s.
