Stock performance
History
Sands China is the Macao arm of the US casino group Las Vegas Sands, which opened the Sands Macao in 2004 as the first Las Vegas-style casino in the territory after Macao ended its long-standing gaming monopoly. It followed with the Venetian Macao on the reclaimed Cotai strip in 2007 and was spun off and listed in Hong Kong in 2009.
Business model
Sands China operates integrated resorts on Cotai, including the Venetian, the Parisian, the Londoner, and the Four Seasons, combining casinos with thousands of hotel rooms, convention space, shopping malls, and entertainment venues. Gaming revenue, especially from mass-market players from mainland China, is its main source of profit.
Market position
Sands China is one of the largest operators in Macao by gaming revenue and hotel capacity, holding one of the six concessions renewed in 2022 for ten years, alongside Galaxy, SJM, Melco, MGM China, and Wynn Macau.
Country impact
Sands China's Cotai resorts helped transform Macao from a gambling enclave into the world's largest gaming market and a major tourist destination. Under its 2022 concession, it is committed, like the other operators, to large investments in non-gaming attractions to help diversify Macao's economy.
