History
Rössing Uranium has operated one of the world's longest-running open-pit uranium mines in the Namib Desert since production began in 1976. Rio Tinto, its long-time majority owner, sold its stake in 2019 to China National Uranium Corporation.
Business model
Rössing mines low-grade uranium ore and processes it into uranium oxide, which is sold to nuclear utilities under long-term contracts.
Market position
Rössing is one of the world's significant uranium producers, and Namibia, with Rössing and the Chinese-owned Husab mine, is one of the largest uranium producers globally.
Country impact
Uranium is one of Namibia's main exports, and the revival of nuclear power has improved the outlook for Rössing and its Erongo-region workforce.
