History

Roche was founded in Basel by Fritz Hoffmann-La Roche, who pioneered branding and marketing standardized pharmaceutical products at a time when medicines were often sold as unbranded generic compounds, and the company grew over more than a century into one of the world's leading pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies. The Hoffmann and Oeri founding families have retained a controlling ownership stake for over 125 years, an unusually long span of continuous family control for a company of Roche's global scale, and the company made a landmark move into biotechnology by acquiring a majority stake in Genentech, one of the pioneering US biotech firms, gradually increasing that stake to full ownership by 2009.
