History
Reliance was founded by Dhirubhai Ambani as a small textile trading firm and grew, through aggressive expansion into petrochemicals, oil refining, and telecommunications, into India's largest private-sector company. After Dhirubhai's death in 2002, his son Mukesh Ambani took control of the energy and materials businesses and pushed Reliance's most transformative move: the 2016 launch of Jio, a mobile network that offered extremely cheap data and voice plans, triggering a price war that made mobile internet affordable for hundreds of millions of Indians and reshaped the country's telecom industry within a few years.
Business model
Reliance operates across three main pillars: oil refining and petrochemicals (its original core, including one of the world's largest single refining complexes), Jio's telecommunications and digital services, and a fast-growing retail arm spanning grocery, fashion, and e-commerce. This diversification lets Reliance fund expansion in newer digital and retail businesses using cash generated from its mature energy operations, and it has attracted major investments from global technology and private-equity firms into its Jio and retail units specifically.
Market position
Reliance is the largest company in India by market capitalization and revenue, and Jio is now the largest mobile network operator in the country by subscribers, having reshaped Indian telecom pricing industry-wide. Its retail arm is also among the largest in India, competing with both traditional retailers and Amazon and Walmart-backed Flipkart in e-commerce, giving Reliance a rare footprint spanning heavy industry, digital infrastructure, and consumer-facing retail all at once.
Country impact
Reliance is a dominant force in the Indian economy, and Jio's cheap-data strategy is widely credited with accelerating India's smartphone and internet adoption more than any single government policy, reshaping how hundreds of millions of Indians access information, commerce, and financial services. Its scale and Ambani family's political and business influence make Reliance a bellwether for Indian corporate and economic policy direction.
