History
QatarEnergy was established as Qatar's state oil and gas company (long known as Qatar Petroleum before a 2021 rebrand) to develop the country's oil resources, but its truly transformative role came from the massive North Field natural-gas reservoir, the largest in the world, whose development from the 1990s onward turned Qatar into the world's leading liquefied natural gas exporter for an extended period and one of the richest countries per capita anywhere.
Business model
QatarEnergy explores for, produces, and exports oil and, most importantly, natural gas as LNG, operating the massive North Field gas development both directly and through joint ventures with international oil majors, and channels the large majority of its revenue directly into Qatari state finances.
Market position
QatarEnergy is one of the largest LNG producers and exporters in the world, historically the single largest, and its North Field expansion projects are among the largest LNG development projects globally, positioning Qatar to remain a dominant global gas supplier for decades.
Country impact
QatarEnergy is the single most important company in Qatar's economy, its natural-gas wealth having funded the country's transformation from a modest fishing and pearling economy into one of the wealthiest nations in the world per capita, and its revenue underpins nearly all major Qatari government spending and sovereign investment activity.
