History
Novo Nordisk was formed through the 1989 merger of two rival Danish insulin producers, Novo Industri and Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium, both tracing back to the 1920s in the years immediately following the discovery of insulin as a diabetes treatment. The company built a dominant position in diabetes care over subsequent decades, and its most consequential recent chapter has been the runaway global success of its GLP-1 drugs Ozempic and Wegovy for diabetes and weight loss, which made it briefly the most valuable company in Europe.
Business model
Novo Nordisk researches, manufactures, and markets treatments for diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases, with GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs — originally developed for diabetes and later approved for weight loss — now representing its largest and fastest-growing product category. It is majority controlled by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, a charitable trust that reinvests dividends into scientific research.
Market position
Novo Nordisk is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world by market value and the dominant global leader in diabetes and obesity-drug treatment, competing primarily with Eli Lilly in the fast-growing GLP-1 weight-loss drug category. Demand for its weight-loss drugs has at times outstripped even its substantial manufacturing capacity.
Country impact
Novo Nordisk is the most valuable company in Denmark and one of the most valuable in all of Europe, and its GLP-1 drug boom has been large enough to meaningfully affect Danish GDP growth and export figures on its own. It is a major employer in Danish pharmaceutical manufacturing and research and a significant source of national economic pride.
