History
The Société Nigérienne d'Électricité (NIGELEC) was founded in 1968 and is majority-owned by the state. For decades it has relied heavily on electricity imported from Nigeria to supply Niamey and southern Niger.
Business model
NIGELEC generates, transmits, and distributes electricity, combining imports from Nigeria with thermal and solar plants in Niger, and serves a population with one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world.
Market position
NIGELEC is Niger's national electricity utility.
Country impact
When Nigeria cut power exports after the July 2023 coup, as part of regional sanctions, Niamey suffered severe blackouts, showing the risks of Niger's dependence on imported electricity and accelerating plans for domestic generation, including the Kandadji dam on the Niger River.
