History
National Australia Bank traces its roots to the National Bank of Australasia, founded in Melbourne during the gold-rush-era growth of colonial Victoria, and grew through a long series of mergers with other regional Australian banks over more than a century to become one of the country's largest financial institutions. It expanded internationally at various points, including into the United Kingdom and United States banking markets, though it later refocused more heavily on its core Australian and New Zealand operations after some of those overseas ventures underperformed.
Business model
NAB provides retail, business, and corporate banking services across Australia and New Zealand, with a particular historical strength and strategic focus on business and agribusiness banking relative to some of its Big Four peers, which tend to be more retail- and mortgage-heavy. This business-banking orientation gives NAB meaningful exposure to Australian small and medium-sized enterprise lending alongside its consumer banking operations.
Market position
NAB is one of Australia's Big Four banks, generally competing closely with Westpac and ANZ for scale, behind market leader Commonwealth Bank, and holds a particularly strong position in small-business and agricultural lending within the Australian market. Its more business-focused loan book gives it a somewhat different risk profile from its more mortgage-concentrated peers.
Country impact
NAB is one of the largest banks in Australia and a significant lender to the country's small-business and agricultural sectors specifically, making its credit conditions an important factor in the health of those parts of the Australian economy beyond just household mortgages. It remains a core holding across Australian retail and superannuation investment portfolios.
