History
The Mass Transit Railway Corporation was established in 1975 by the Hong Kong government to build an underground railway, and its first line opened in 1979. It was partially privatized and listed in 2000, merged with the government-owned Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation's operations in 2007, and has since become a global rail operator, though the government still owns about three-quarters of its shares.
Business model
MTR is known for its 'rail plus property' model: it receives development rights for land above and around its stations, builds and sells or leases residential and commercial property there, and uses the profits to fund railway construction and operation without large ongoing subsidies. It also runs rail services under contract in mainland China, London (including the Elizabeth line), Stockholm, Sydney, and Melbourne.
Market position
MTR is regarded as one of the world's most efficient and reliable metro operators, with on-time performance consistently above 99.9%, and its integrated property-and-transit approach is widely studied by other cities.
Country impact
MTR carries millions of passengers a day and is the backbone of Hong Kong's public transport, enabling one of the world's densest cities to function with relatively low car use. Its station developments have shaped the growth of new towns, and its fares and service disruptions are closely scrutinized politically.
