History
MTN was launched as one of South Africa's first mobile-network operators shortly after the country's transition to democracy in the mid-1990s, and pursued an aggressive African and Middle Eastern expansion strategy over the following decades, entering dozens of markets across the continent, often among the first mobile operators to establish networks in countries with previously minimal telecom infrastructure. This first-mover strategy across much of Sub-Saharan Africa made MTN one of the most recognizable telecom brands on the continent, though it has also faced significant regulatory disputes and fines in some markets, most notably Nigeria.
Business model
MTN provides mobile telecommunications, mobile-money and fintech services, and broadband internet across roughly twenty African and Middle Eastern countries, with mobile money (allowing users without traditional bank accounts to store and transfer money via phone) becoming an increasingly important business line given widespread underbanking across many of its African markets. Its scale across so many national telecom markets gives it significant negotiating leverage and infrastructure-sharing opportunities.
Market position
MTN is one of the largest mobile-network operators in Africa and the Middle East by subscriber count, competing with Vodacom, Airtel Africa, and various national operators across its many markets. Its mobile-money platforms have positioned it as a significant player in African financial inclusion, an area of increasing strategic focus as data and voice revenue growth has matured in many markets.
Country impact
MTN is one of the largest companies in South Africa and one of the most significant vehicles for South African corporate expansion across the rest of the African continent, though its Nigerian operations in particular have been the subject of major regulatory disputes and fines that have periodically weighed on its share price and diplomatic relations between South Africa and Nigeria. Its mobile-money services have had a meaningful impact on financial inclusion across several African economies.
