Malta International Airport
Stock performance
History
Malta International Airport plc took over the management of the island's only airport at Luqa when it was privatized in 2002, with a consortium led by Vienna Airport becoming the strategic shareholder. The company has since been listed on the Malta Stock Exchange.
Business model
The company earns revenue from airline charges, passenger fees, retail and food concessions, car parking, and real estate around the airport, and holds a long-term concession to operate it.
Market position
As the operator of Malta's only airport, the company handles almost all of the country's air traffic and has posted record passenger numbers since the post-pandemic recovery.
Country impact
Tourism is one of the pillars of Malta's economy, and nearly all visitors arrive by air, so passenger numbers at the airport are a direct gauge of the sector's health. The airport's growth also reflects the expansion of low-cost airlines, notably Ryanair's Malta-based operations.
