History
maib (Moldova Agroindbank) was founded in 1991, shortly after independence, out of the Soviet-era agricultural bank's Moldovan operations, and grew into the country's largest bank. After a period of murky ownership around the time of Moldova's 2014 banking fraud, a consortium including the EBRD, Horizon Capital, and Lithuania's Invalda bought a controlling stake in 2018, restoring transparent ownership.
Business model
maib provides retail, small-business, and corporate banking, with a strong digital banking and card business, and is a major processor of payments and remittances in Moldova.
Market position
maib is the largest bank in Moldova by assets, deposits, and customers, ahead of Moldindconbank and Victoriabank.
Country impact
maib's clean-up after the 2014 'theft of the century', in which about $1 billion vanished from three Moldovan banks, was a key part of rebuilding trust in the banking system, and it now plays a central role in financing households and businesses.
