History
A.P. Moller-Maersk was founded by Arnold Peter Møller as a single steamship company and grew, under continuous Møller-family leadership across generations, into the largest container-shipping company in the world, central to the globalization of trade in the late twentieth century as containerized shipping transformed how goods move internationally. The company has more recently diversified beyond pure ocean freight into integrated logistics services.
Business model
Maersk operates container shipping, port terminals, and integrated logistics services connecting manufacturers and retailers worldwide, moving goods across a vast network of owned and chartered container vessels. Its scale in vessel capacity and global port infrastructure gives it significant influence over global shipping rates and capacity, which are notoriously volatile and cyclical.
Market position
Maersk is one of the two or three largest container-shipping companies in the world, competing with Switzerland's MSC and France's CMA CGM, and its shipping rates and capacity decisions are closely watched as indicators of global trade health and supply-chain conditions.
Country impact
Maersk is one of the largest and most globally significant companies to originate in Denmark, and its shipping network is deeply embedded in global trade infrastructure well beyond Danish borders. It remains a symbol of Danish maritime and industrial heritage and a major domestic employer and taxpayer.
