Jamaica Public Service
Stock performance
History
Jamaica Public Service (JPS) was established in 1923 and became the island's sole electricity distributor. After decades of state ownership it was privatized, and it is now owned mainly by Japan's Marubeni and Korea East-West Power, with the Jamaican government holding a minority stake.
Business model
JPS generates part of Jamaica's electricity, buys the rest from independent power producers, and holds the exclusive license to transmit and distribute power across the island. Its generation has shifted from heavy fuel oil toward natural gas, and renewables are growing.
Market position
JPS is Jamaica's sole electricity transmission and distribution company.
Country impact
High electricity costs have long been a barrier to Jamaican competitiveness, and JPS's pricing, reliability, and the future of its license are recurring political issues. Restoring power after hurricanes is one of its most visible responsibilities.
