History
Infosys was founded in Pune by N. R. Narayana Murthy and six colleagues with a small amount of borrowed capital, aiming to build a professionally managed, globally competitive Indian technology-services company at a time when India's economy was still largely closed and state-directed. It relocated to Bengaluru and grew alongside that city's rise as India's technology hub, becoming in 1999 the first Indian company listed on the Nasdaq. Infosys became closely associated with the broader Indian IT-outsourcing boom and was widely seen as setting governance and ethical-business standards that influenced the sector.
Business model
Infosys provides IT consulting, software development, and business-process outsourcing services to large global corporate clients, similar in structure to TCS, organized around long-term client engagements across finance, manufacturing, retail, and other industries. It has invested significantly in digital, cloud, and AI-consulting capabilities to move up from lower-margin legacy IT maintenance work toward higher-value digital-transformation consulting for clients.
Market position
Infosys is the second-largest IT-services company in India after TCS and one of the largest globally, competing directly with TCS, Wipro, HCLTech domestically and Accenture and IBM internationally. It has generally been viewed as a bellwether for the broader Indian IT sector's health, with its quarterly earnings and hiring guidance closely watched by investors as an indicator of global corporate technology spending trends.
Country impact
Infosys, alongside TCS, helped build India's global reputation as a technology-services powerhouse and remains one of the largest employers and exporters in the Indian IT sector, a major contributor to the country's services-trade surplus. Its co-founders, including Narayana Murthy, remain influential figures in Indian corporate governance and public discourse on education and entrepreneurship.
