History
H&M was founded as Hennes, a women's clothing store, in the Swedish city of Västerås, and expanded into menswear after acquiring a hunting-equipment retailer called Mauritz Widforss in 1968, forming the combined Hennes & Mauritz name. Under continued Persson family leadership across generations, H&M grew into one of the pioneers of the affordable 'fast fashion' retail model alongside Spain's Zara, expanding aggressively across Europe and eventually worldwide from the 1970s onward by offering trend-driven clothing at accessible prices through large-scale, centrally managed store networks.
Business model
H&M designs and retails affordable fashion clothing and accessories through a large global network of physical stores and an increasingly important e-commerce operation, relying primarily on outsourced manufacturing across low-cost production countries in Asia and elsewhere, coordinated through a centralized design and buying organization based in Sweden. Its business model depends on rapid trend-response and high sales volume at accessible price points rather than Inditex's more tightly vertically integrated, faster-turnaround supply chain.
Market position
H&M is one of the largest fashion retailers in the world by revenue, generally ranked as the second-largest global fast-fashion retailer behind Inditex's Zara, and competes increasingly with online-only fast-fashion challengers like Shein and Temu that have put pressure on traditional store-based fast-fashion retailers' growth and pricing. It has invested in sustainability initiatives and store-network optimization to respond to these competitive pressures.
Country impact
H&M is one of the largest and most globally recognized companies in Sweden, and the Persson family's continued controlling ownership across multiple generations makes it a prominent example of enduring Swedish family business leadership at global scale. It remains a significant contributor to Swedish corporate tax revenue and international brand reputation.
