History

Habib Bank was founded in Bombay before Pakistan's 1947 independence and partition, relocating its operations to Pakistan afterward and growing into the country's largest bank. It was nationalized in the 1970s along with much of Pakistan's banking sector, then privatized again in 2004 as Pakistan liberalized its financial sector, with the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development taking a significant ownership stake.

Business model

Habib Bank Limited provides retail, corporate, and investment banking services across Pakistan and a smaller international network in the Middle East, UK, and other markets serving the Pakistani diaspora, drawing on one of the country's largest and oldest banking franchises.

Market position

Habib Bank Limited is the largest bank in Pakistan by assets, holding a leading position in a banking sector that also includes United Bank Limited, MCB Bank, and other major domestic lenders.

Country impact

Habib Bank is one of the largest and most historically significant financial institutions in Pakistan, and its history of nationalization and reprivatization mirrors the broader arc of Pakistani economic policy since independence. It remains central to Pakistani household and business banking.
