Guyana Sugar Corporation
Stock performance
History
The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) was formed in 1976 when the government nationalized the sugar estates owned by Booker McConnell and Jessel Holdings, the British companies that had dominated the colonial economy. Sugar output peaked in the early 2000s, then declined sharply as costs rose and European trade preferences ended, leading the government to close several estates in 2016-17.
Business model
GuySuCo grows sugarcane on its estates and buys cane from private farmers, processes it into sugar and molasses, and sells to domestic, regional, and export markets. It relies heavily on government funding, and the state has been investing to rehabilitate factories and reopen some closed estates.
Market position
GuySuCo is Guyana's sole large-scale sugar producer, though output is now a fraction of its historical peak.
Country impact
Sugar was the backbone of Guyana's economy for centuries and remains a major employer in rural communities, so the industry's decline and the closure of estates had heavy social costs. Its future is a politically sensitive question even as oil has replaced it as the country's economic engine.
