History

Grupo México grew out of mining assets developed by the Larrea family starting in the mid-twentieth century, expanding significantly through the 1990s privatization of Mexican state mining and rail assets, including the acquisition of a major national rail concession. It further expanded internationally in 2005 through the acquisition of ASARCO-related and, separately, Peruvian copper assets via its Southern Copper subsidiary, building one of the largest copper-mining operations in the Americas alongside its domestic Mexican rail and infrastructure businesses.

Business model

Grupo México operates through two main divisions: mining, primarily copper production via its majority-owned Southern Copper subsidiary operating in Mexico and Peru, and transportation, through its Ferromex rail network, one of Mexico's largest freight-rail operators. This combination gives the group both resource-extraction and logistics-infrastructure revenue streams, with copper mining historically the larger profit driver given global copper demand growth.

Market position

Grupo México, through Southern Copper, is one of the largest copper producers in the world, benefiting from rising global copper demand tied to electrification and renewable-energy infrastructure. Its Ferromex subsidiary is one of the two dominant freight-rail operators in Mexico, giving the group a significant logistics role in Mexican industrial trade, particularly cross-border trade with the United States.

Country impact

Grupo México is one of the largest companies in Mexico and a major contributor to the country's mining exports and rail freight capacity, both critical to Mexican industrial trade with the United States under the USMCA trade agreement. It is also one of Mexico's largest private employers in mining regions, and its mining safety record has periodically drawn public and regulatory scrutiny domestically.
