Gabon Oil Company
Stock performance
History
Gabon Oil Company (GOC) was created by presidential decree in 2011 as the national oil company, wholly owned by the state, to give Gabon a direct stake in its petroleum sector. In 2024 it significantly expanded its production by acquiring Assala Energy, a major onshore producer, from the US private-equity firm Carlyle.
Business model
GOC holds state participations in oil fields, operates some fields directly, and markets the state's share of crude oil, with the aim of capturing more of the value from Gabon's oil production.
Market position
GOC has grown into one of Gabon's significant oil producers, alongside international operators such as Perenco and Maurel & Prom.
Country impact
Oil remains Gabon's largest export and source of government revenue, and the expansion of GOC is part of a push, accelerated after the 2023 coup, to increase national control over natural resources.
