Stock performance
History
Flor de Caña is made by Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, founded in 1890 at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano in Chichigalpa by the Pellas family, which still controls it; the Flor de Caña brand itself was launched in 1937. The company survived the expropriations and upheavals of the 1980s and in later decades built its aged rums into an internationally recognized premium brand.
Business model
The company distills rum from molasses produced by the family's neighboring sugar mill, ages it in barrels in Nicaragua, and exports it to dozens of countries. It markets the brand on its sustainability credentials, including Fair Trade and carbon-neutral certifications.
Market position
Flor de Caña is Nicaragua's best-known export brand and one of the leading premium rums from Central America, competing with Ron Zacapa, Diplomático, and Caribbean brands.
Country impact
Flor de Caña is part of the Pellas group, one of Nicaragua's most important business conglomerates, and its exports bring in significant foreign currency and international recognition for the country.
