History

Enzo Ferrari founded the company after leaving Alfa Romeo's racing division, initially focused purely on motorsport, with road cars built mainly to fund the Scuderia Ferrari racing team's participation in Formula 1 and endurance racing. Fiat acquired a majority stake in 1969 to secure Ferrari's financial future while allowing Enzo to retain control over racing operations until his death in 1988. Ferrari was spun off from the Fiat Chrysler (later Stellantis) group and listed as an independent public company in 2015, giving it a standalone stock-market identity separate from its mass-market parent for the first time.

Business model

Ferrari designs, manufactures, and sells ultra-luxury sports cars in deliberately limited volumes, a scarcity strategy central to maintaining exclusivity and pricing power, alongside a Formula 1 racing team, licensing, and branded merchandise. Unlike most automakers that pursue volume growth, Ferrari explicitly caps annual production well below demand, allowing it to sustain some of the highest profit margins in the entire auto industry.

Market position

Ferrari occupies a unique position at the very top of the automotive industry, commanding valuation multiples closer to a luxury-goods company than a traditional carmaker, and faces limited direct competition given its combination of racing heritage, brand exclusivity, and deliberately constrained supply. Its closest rivals in ultra-luxury performance cars, such as Lamborghini and Aston Martin, operate at smaller scale and with less storied motorsport pedigree.

Country impact

Ferrari is one of Italy's most iconic global brands and a significant symbol of Italian design and engineering excellence, anchoring a cluster of specialized automotive suppliers and craftsmanship around its Maranello headquarters in the Emilia-Romagna region. Its Formula 1 team is the sport's oldest and most storied, giving Ferrari an outsized cultural and marketing presence well beyond its actual production volumes.
