History

Falabella began as a tailoring shop in Santiago and evolved over more than a century into Chile's largest department-store and retail conglomerate, expanding through the twentieth century into home-improvement retail, supermarkets, and financial services under one corporate umbrella. From the 1990s onward it expanded aggressively across Latin America, building major retail operations in Peru, Colombia, and Argentina, becoming one of the most significant Chilean multinational companies and a template other Chilean retailers followed into regional expansion.

Falabella operates department stores, home-improvement retail (Sodimac), supermarkets (Tottus), and consumer financial services including credit cards and banking, across Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina, giving it a diversified retail-and-finance conglomerate structure distinctive among Latin American retailers. Its financial-services arm, offering store credit cards to a large customer base, has historically been a significant profit contributor alongside its physical retail operations.
