History

Erste Group began in 1819 as the Erste österreichische Spar-Casse, Austria's first savings bank, set up to give ordinary people a safe place to save. After the fall of the Iron Curtain it became one of the most aggressive Western investors in Central and Eastern European banking, buying Česká spořitelna in the Czech Republic in 2000, Slovenská sporiteľňa in Slovakia, and Romania's BCR in 2006, and in 2025 it agreed to buy a 49% controlling stake in Santander Bank Polska, extending its reach into Poland.

Business model

Erste focuses on retail and small- and medium-sized business banking across Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, and Serbia, earning most of its profit from net interest income on deposits and loans. Its George digital banking platform is shared across its markets, and its main shareholder is the ERSTE Foundation, which channels part of its dividends into social and civil-society projects in the region.

Market position

Erste is one of the largest banking groups in Central and Eastern Europe and holds leading market shares in several of its countries, notably the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Romania. Alongside Raiffeisen Bank International, it is one of the two Austrian banks whose regional footprint makes Vienna a banking hub for the whole region.

Country impact

Through its ties to Austria's network of local savings banks (Sparkassen), Erste is a core part of household and small-business finance at home, while its eastern subsidiaries generate a large share of group profit. Its expansion is a prime example of how Austrian firms turned their geographic proximity to the former communist bloc into a lasting economic advantage after 1989.
